Loranger, LA

As expected well over two hundred racers and just as many spectators showed up to Round 8 of the ’11 LACC Series to have some fun in the sun at The Don Burgess Memorial race.  The weather in Loranger, LA near Hammond was beautiful and dust kept to a minimum, lows in the fifties, and breezy; it doesn’t get much better than that.

Yamaha YZ250 pilot Joel White showed up this past weekend ready to race.  White blasted off the start line in the XC1 class to get the holeshot but then a mistake early on allowed Jonathan Plunkett  (KTM/MTA/Bridgestone) and Jake Haddox (KTM/Brewton Insurance/Soil Stabilizers) to get by.  Plunkett came through the scoring tent on the first lap in the lead but then White regrouped and jumped back up front.  White led for three solid laps until Bryan Vaughan showed up on a mission!

Vaughan put his Pivot Works/Hot Rods / DP Brakes / Maxima / Moose / Ricochet KTM 2-stroke out front and never looked back; roosting his way to the finish line ahead of White in 2nd place and Jason Harvey (SUZ/Cycle Gear) in third.  This is Vaughan’s first overall of the 2011 season which got off to somewhat of a slow start due to surgery recovery.

KTM rider Andy Beebe (Team ¾ / MTA / Scott Equipment) was dead-last off the start but put in a solid ride to work his way up to fourth overall ahead of Jake Haddox settling in at fifth overall; Wesley Burks (KTM) in sixth, and Kevin Hutchinson (KAW) in seventh.  Number four Stephen Sturges looked to be in top form running in the top 5 aboard the Thumper Racing big bore 320 until a rear flat pushed him back to eighth overall.  John McLemore (KTM/Mike’s Outdoors) and Novice class rider Dakotah Smith (KTM) rounded out the top ten.

Corey Altazin (KTM/WPS/Fly Racing) edged out Reese Comeaux (KTM/AcadianaRacing.com/Reese Engineering) for the holeshot in the XC2 Lites class.  Altazin held the lead for two laps but then eventually fell back to third behind a hard-charging Clint Woods (KTM/Mike’s Outdoors/Woods Tank) who won the class and Honda rider Coty Smiley (Cycle Gear) who finished second.  Like many other Expert class podium finishers Woods thanked the LACC staff for putting on another great event and his Mike’s Outdoors support.  Newcomer Smiley while on the podium, “I come from a motocross background and this was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done…an hour and a half…”
