November '09 Interview with Louisiana's Evan Shows

We took a few minutes to find out more about 14 year-old speedster Evan Shows, the 2009 LA Cross-Country Championship Kids Vet class winner.  Evan is the son of Chris and Tammy Shows of Zachary, LA.

So, you won the Kids Vet class! How does it feel to come out on top even after the injury setback?  What did you break?

This season has been an emotional rollercoaster. I won the first 5 rounds in the Vet class then broke my leg. I felt like the king of the world when I finished at Leesville [final Rnd]. That was probably the happiest I've ever been. I actually crashed in practice the day before so I wasn't even sure I was going to ride. When I broke my leg I was super bummed, and I thought all chances were gone for winning the championship. Then winning with a broken leg just made the championship that much better. I broke the fibula and I had a triplanar fracture that went through the growth plate in the tibia. I have 3 screws in my leg that I will get out at Christmas. I was practicing at Spring Creek MX near Kentwood and I tried to seatbounce a camelback right out of a turn. I tried to get all the speed I needed in the exit of the turn instead of carrying speed all the way around the corner and the back wheel broke loose going up the face of the jump and I landed sideways. The bike went flipping and something must have hit my ankle.

Taking the win at Round 10 - Leesville Motorsports Park to seal the deal.

Ouch…So how long have you been into racing and is this your first serious attempt at racing an entire series?  What else are you in to?

Well, my dad always had a bike when I was growing up and I rode on his handlebars all the time. Then, I started riding when I was 4 on a PW 50 in my backyard. Then when I was like 5 I entered in my first race. It was a motocross race at the old Gonzalez race track and I won. Then my first woods race was a SERA race somewhere in Louisiana and I got runover and I finished 10th. This is my first time racing an entire series. I would always race like 2 races of a series and do pretty well and then I would tell my dad we should race the whole series but we never did. Then when the LACC series came up, we decided to try to race the whole series because all the races were close. I actually have tried trials riding. I think it has been a big part of me being a good mud and sand rider because it teaches great body position. I play baseball now at a local youth league and I played soccer one year but didn't like it. I wrestled last year but not competitively because the meets were on Saturdays, I just practiced with the high school team.

Right:  Evan's Father Chris brought him to a race at the Burgess's track in Gonzales in '01 thinking it was a practice day...he went ahead and raced his first race...and won it.

Cool, moving on to other stuff outside of racing…school, girls, grades...college?  Favorites?

I go to Zachary High, and I don't have a girlfriend. I make mostly A's and then some B's here and there. I want to go to USC or UCLA somewhere over there in California. Mostly for the riding scene. I have no idea what I want to be, it changes daily.  My favorite music is probably hip-hop, I like Jay-Z's new album. My favorite movie is the Italian Job. I love tacos. I can eat like 8 of them. I ride KTM and always will. I like Answer helmets.

How about little brother [Walker] dominating his class [PeeWee]?  Do you teach him any or is that left up to Dad?

Walker was great this year. I try to teach him but I don't, I just get really aggravated and start screaming. Really it's just him riding a lot, and riding with older, faster people.

Plans for next year?

I won't be able to race Kids Vet next year but I will be out there cheering for Brennan. I am super excited about racing the big races. I will either race junior or XC2, it really just depends on what Jake [Haddox] and Russ [Wiggers] ride and how fast I am when I can really ride again. I raced 3 adult races and I had a great time. I finished 1st in junior at round 3, and 10th overall, then at round 4 I fouled a plug on the line, then at round 5 I was battling with Jake and crashed hard in a high speed section and hurt my knee, so I just quit. So really I only raced 1.5 adult races but I had fun and that's what I signed up to do.

Thanks for the time, I’ll let you get back to the normal routine…anyone you want to thank?

I want to thank my mom for putting up with me and my brother all the way to the races, my dad for not killing me when I tore up my bike, Mr. Glynn, Mr. Mike, and Mrs. Marie at Mike's Cycle Supply, I want to thank all the guys at Gravett Racing for doing my suspension, Factory Backing just hooked me up with some sweet graphics that I wasn't able to get on in time for the last race, Opticride.com kept me stocked with goggles, and MXprints.com put my name on my jerseys for me, they looked awesome, and Answer Racing and Mr. Lucas and all the staff at LACC for putting on an AWESOME series that I wouldn't miss for the world next year, and anyone else I forgot.
